The best way to split the check is to avoid doing so. If you meet your old roommate for Sunday brunch often, just pick up the tab. She'll get it the next time. But when you do need to split the bill, there are graceful ways to handle that awkward moment.

Don't split hairs. The worst thing you can do is nickel-and-dime everyone when the bill comes. If you know it is going to be an elaborate meal with a big group, expect to divide the check evenly, even if everyone has steak and martinis and you have only a salad. If your share is hundreds of dollars less, discreetly tell the person in charge, "I think my salad was $10, so here's $20 to cover tip and tax." That will make you seem generous without having to pay for everyone else's truffle fries.
