Whether or not Marie Antoinette actually uttered those immortal words "Let them eat cake" doesn't really matter for the charming young dancers in ABT II, the junior company of American Ballet Theatre. This month, they produce a CAKE of their own in a ballet by Brian Reeder that explores the story of the excessive, glamorous queen. "The idea is to flesh out the spirit of her journey," Reeder says. "It's a little recipe about her life."
As a choreographer, Reeder draws upon his rich experience with companies like ABT, New York City Ballet, and William Forsythe's Ballett Frankfurt; he is particularly adept at pulling dramatic qualities from the group's talented pool of pre-professional dancers.
