An Interview With Leigh Lezark
Lezark is a DJ and a member of the MisShapes. They recently performed at a Chanel party at the Plaza Hotel.
Music inspires people to have a good time--parties are only boring when the sound track is completely wrong. We recently hosted a birthday party for model Agyness Deyn. At the end of the night, after "Happy Birthday," it turned into a giant cake fight. I'd like to think the music we played had something to do with that.
Create the vibe. Dinner-party music should be mellow but still cool; people don't want silence, but they also don't want to be rocking in their seats while they're making conversation. The Similou, Billie Holiday, Vampire Weekend, and Coconut Records are all great to eat by. For cocktail parties, where you want the music to be faster (but not too fast), I like Hot Chip, Dragonette, New Young Pony Club, and MIA. And at a dance party, you want to play things that get people out of their seats. Chris Brown is good for livening things up, and so is Justice.
Mix it up. Variety is the best way to keep people interested. Unless you're sitting down to dinner, a party playlist should be a mix of slow songs, fast ...
