Faith in government dissolves

The majority of the public no longer has faith in the ability of government and other institutions to protect their personal data, according to a survey conducted for the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
More than half (53%) of respondents said they had no confidence in the way that banks, councils and government departments handled personal information.
The nationwide survey of 1,000 people, carried out by ICM in February, found that people had started taking more care of their personal data, with 88% saying they now checked their bank statements more regularly, and 85% refusing to give out personal details wherever possible.
