SINCE THE NATIONAL LEAGUE CAME INTO BEING IN 1876, THERE HAVE BEEN approximately 6,900 pitchers who have toiled in the majors.
Maybe that's a generous estimate, but from Don Aase to George Zuverink, these pitchers through the years have been known by such delightful names as Mysterious Walker, Cannonball Titcomb, Blue Moon Odom, Oil Can Boyd and Phenomenal Smith.
They have also included an elite group of 300-game winners who at the start of the 2003 season numbered only 20 members.
That makes for an exclusive club the admission to which, with two obvious exceptions, may be shut down for future generations of pitchers.
