Data security fatally flawed by lax business practices
Laura Smith
The Information Commissioner's warning that private and public sector organisations are not doing enough to protect data has been backed up by a survey of UK businesses.
The survey of more than 1,000 UK businesses, carried out by Pricewaterhouse Coopers on behalf of the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, found that almost 90% allowed staff to leave offices with potentially confidential information stored on USB memory sticks.
It also found that nearly 80% of respondents reporting a stolen computer had not encrypted the information on the hard drive.
Another worrying finding was that attempts to hack into company networks had risen, with 13% of respondents reporting unauthorised people on their networks, compared with 1% two years ago.
A fifth of the companies surveyed spent less than 1% of their IT budget on security.
