This year's Philadelphia Antiques Show a major annual event for collectors that brings together more than fifty top American art and antiques dealers, will take place from April 12 to 15 at a new venue--the Philadelphia Navy Yard. In honor of its new home, the loan exhibition is organized by the Independence Seaport Museum in memory of its founder J. Welles Henderson (1920-2007), who believed Philadelphia should join the ranks of port cities like Boston, New York, and Baltimore with institutions that celebrate their seafaring heritage. Entitled Fore and Aft--Philadelphia Collects Maritime, it will feature maritime paintings, decorative arts, and artifacts dating from the fifteenth century through the 1860s from both public and private collections throughout the region.
Now in its forty-seventh year, the Philadelphia Antiques Show offers an impressive array of important furniture, folk and fine art, ceramics, porcelain, silver, and textiles. Proceeds benefit the University of Pennsylvania Health System and will help finance the new Penn Lung Center. Complimentary shuttle bus service between Philadelphia's Thirtieth Street Station and the Navy Yard will be provided, and a series of lectures and guided tours that complement the loan exhibition will take place throughout the show.
