When a shoe fits, it turns into the most magical thing," said Edmundo Castillo, the creative director of Sergio Rossi. It was early summer in New York City, and Castillo, who as a matter of personal vibe (understated) is one of the world's coolest cordwainers, was on his hands and knees tracing my not insubstantial footprints on butcher paper. He was giving me a Christmas present-a pair of shoes of my choosing made specifically for me-and this was our first fitting. His job was to trace and measure; mine, to dream high, as in a 100-mm peep-toe slingback in pink sand croc. I wanted something skinny and leg-lengthening and very grown-up that was nonetheless as comfy as favorite flats. Castillo assured me this was possible. "A shoe," he purred with a smile, "should never feel the way it looks."
