The Bastille Day parade was barely over when the new French president left his guest of honor, the emir of Qatar, and broke protocol to cross the Place de la Concorde, pursued by TV cameras and puzzled aides. The cameras had recorded Nicolas Sarkozy's unguarded euphoria all day, his exuberant joy as he rode down the _Champs-_Elysees in an open jeep with the uniformed heads of the army and the navy. He gave off the excitement of a child with a new toy, and the new toy was France.
