JAPAN'S UNY, IZUMIYA FORM ALLIANCE TO TAKE ON SUPERMARKET GIANTS.
NAGOYA, May 1 Asia Pulse - Supermarket operators Uny Co. (TSE:8270) and Izumiya Co. (TSE:8266) have agreed to a business tie-up involving joint procurement and product development as competition with bigger rivals heats up, The Nikkei learned Wednesday.
Fourth-ranked Uny and Osaka-based Izumiya also plan to invite local supermarket operators to join their camp in an attempt to turn the alliance into a third force in the supermarket sector, where Aeon Co. (TSE:8267) and Seven & i Holdings Co. (TSE:3382) are becoming increasingly dominant. Third-ranked Daiei Inc. (TSE:8263) operates under Aeon's umbrella.
Uny and Izumiya plan to begin co-procuring such products as household goods as early as this year. The number of items to be purchased jointly will be gradually increased, and other supermarket operators will be invited to join ...
