JAKARTA, May 1$ Asia Pulse - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked all government officials and the people to economize on their energy consumption in facing soaring world crude prices which burdens the state budget.
"I order all government institutions to efficiently use fuel oil for their cars, their power consumption and the use of air conditioners," the president said in a nation-wide state address on Wednesday night.
World crude prices had increased reaching US$120 per barrel.
"I ask the organizers of entertainment and shopping centers to also use energy efficiently. Fuel consumption for official and private cars should be minimized," the head of state said.
The president expressed confidence that Indonesia could solve its present hardship if all people are willing to cooperate to overcome the energy shortfalls.
On the occasion the president said Indonesia and several other countries are also facing another common problem, namely staple food price hikes.
"At present, the high prices of staple food have already affected us. In the short run the government has issued a food price stabilization policy," he said, adding that in the long run the government would continue boosting food production.
