PADANG, W Sumatra, May 1 Asia Pulse - Indonesia's State power company PT PLN oveerseeing West Sumatra wants assurances, before the signing of a cooperation agreement with the West Sumatra provincial administration on the construction of the coal-fired power plant PLTU Teluk Sirih in Bungus subdistrict, Padang, that the land on which the power plant will be built is not located in a protected forest.
"We really appreciate the guarantee of the West Sumatra governor that the 40 hectares of land on which the PLTU will be built is not located in a protected forest and is already certified by the Forestry Ministry," spokesman for the West Sumatra PLN office Asep said in Padang on Wednesday.
PT PLN planned to build the 2 x 100 megawatts (MW) PLTU Teluk Sirih at a cost of Rp2.5 trillion (US$270 million), but the forestry ministry said that the 40 ha of land for the project is located in a protected forest.
Therefore before the signing of a cooperation agreement and contract on the bulding of the project between PT PLN and the West Sumatra provincial administration scheduled on May 9, 2008, there must be a certainty on the status of the land, that it is not located in a protected forest of the ministry of forestry, he pointed out.
Earlier, West Sumatra Governor Gamawan Fauzi has firmly guaranteed that the 40 ha of land is not located in a protected forest.
And Gamawan was even ready to submit a written recommandation to the Minister of Forestry for a lease of the forest land.
