CANBERRA, May 1 Asia Pulse - Australian wheat exporter AWB (ASX:AWB) has welcomed a proposal to amend draft marketing arrangements aimed at toughening up protections against regional monopolies dominating the industry.
A Senate committee has given the go-ahead to Rudd government plans to end AWB's monopoly over bulk wheat exports.
But the committee recommended toughening up the conditions imposed on exporters to ensure open access to facilities by competitors.
AWB's managing director Gordon Davis said he supported focusing on fair access by tasking the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) with ensuring regional monopolies did not emerge in storage and handling.
