KARACHI, May 1 Asia Pulse - The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) and Karachi Bioethics Group (KBG), a group of physicians from different medical institutions in the City, organised a joint session at PMA House the other day in which they expressed concerns over the growing violation of the Organ Transplant Ordinance-2007.
This session expressed profound concerns at recent reports of flagrant violation of the Organ Transplant Ordinance-2007. The purpose of the joint session was to highlight this issue, which is rapidly earning a bad name for not only the medical profession but also the country.
While, addressing the issue Dr Farhat Moazzam, chairperson CBEC said that the Human Organ Transplant Ordinance 2007 finally came forth after the 15 years collective struggle of concerned citizens and professionals who explicitly prohibit organ commerce and transplantation of foreigners with kidneys obtained from Pakistani citizens. Despite this, in the past 3 months reports are appearing that in Pakistan the private hospitals in Islamabad and Lahore are continuing to perform transplants on foreigners.
"What is not understandable is that despite a law in Pakistan why such activities are not being stopped and those involved being punished. It is important for the government to prove that Ordinance 2007 is not a paper tiger but a proper law that will be enforced transparently and effectively," he said.
