Cargill has recalled almost 1.1 million pounds of ground beef products because they might be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. (We reported on a Topps Meat Company recall of 22 million pounds for the same reason in December 2007.) The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service classified this as a Class 1 recall (high health risk) because E. coli O157:H7 can be lethal, especially for the very young or seniors and for those with compromised immune systems. No illnesses have been reported.
