When Amazon launched its new electronic-book reader, the Kindle, consumers snapped it up. (It sold out before the holidays.) And Sony has revamped its own e-book reader. Is it time for you to kick the hardcover habit and go digital?
Probably not. The new readers, about the size of a large paperback, use E Ink technology that makes for easier reading than on a computer screen, and they're more booklike to use than a laptop. But the type, dark gray on pale gray, lacks the contrast of book type.The screen briefly turns black during page turns, which are frequent on the 6-inch "e-page." And e-book readers are pricey: $399 for Amazon's, $299 for Sony's.
