Byline: FLORENCE KANE Photographed by Steven Klein.
Model Caroline Trentini--wearing spring's big-volume trousers--gets settled in her new, ultramodern abode at the Herzog & de Meuron--designed 40 Bond in Manhattan. Actor Channing Tatum helps her unpack.
the recruit
For about six days or so, we were out in the woods in Texas," recalls the actor Channing Tatum. "It wasn't anything near what real boot camp is, but we woke up at 4:30 A.M., did physical training, and then they proceeded to jam as much military information as possible into our heads." All this in preparation for this month's release of Stop-Loss, in which Tatum, 27, plays a soldier returning home from Iraq. In the film, directed by Kimberly Peirce ( Boys Don't Cry ), he's the self-sacrificing best friend of Ryan Phillippe's character, Brandon King, who goes AWOL after being ordered back to duty under the U.S. military's right to retain service members beyond their enlistment contracts. "They are like my brothers now," Tatum says, especially referring to his costars Phillippe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. And he feels a bond with real-life GIs, too. "I have an immense respect for them and what they do for us. I want to get involved with USO shows--I don't know what I could give them, but as soon as I do I'm going to go abroad immediately."
The native Alabaman and college athlete got his start as a model, even appearing in a June 2001 Bruce Weber shoot for VOGUE, and next stars alongside Terrence Howard in the forthcoming movie drama Fighting. "He's a stylish guy," Tatum says of Howard. "He started schooling me in all the old silver-screen actors who would wake up and put on a three-piece suit."
