Spring's colorful paints and pencils are fit for an artist's studio but made for the makeup bag.
Fashion has been flirting with the art world for some time, and this season was no exception: Richard Prince's collaboration with Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton resulted in spray-painted bags that sparked an instant wait list; Gustav Klimt's shimmering, mosaic-like work inspired opulence at Missoni. And things got even more literal at Dolce & Gabbana, where the models--wearing billowy, paint-slashed tulle ball dresses--looked like they'd traipsed through Willem de Kooning's studio en route to the runway. Makeup was similarly inspired: "Surrealist" eyes elaborately lined in chalk blue and black at Rodarte, paint-by-number lids at Michael Kors, Crayola-colored lips at Vuitton. And spring's new cosmetics? They look as though they came straight from the art-supply store, with products resembling tubes of oil paint (Clarins) and calligraphy pens (Styli-Style's precision felt-tip eyeliners).
