Home hair-color kits allow us to change our look at will--but the formulas themselves haven't changed all that much for a few decades. Now Clairol boasts that its new Nice 'n Easy Perfect 10 at-home kit is "the first major advance in fundamental hair-color chemistry in more than 50 years." We asked a colorist and a cosmetic chemist to put it to the test.

THE FORMULA: It contains a new amino-acid complex instead of ammonia--the damaging (and smelly) chemical traditionally used to lighten hair--and works in ten minutes instead of the usual 20.
