Ellen Page loved the freedom of backpacking in Europe last summer: showering in hostels, getting lost. That kind of anonymous adventure may be a thing of the past with the release of Juno, in which the 20-year-old actress plays a pregnant teenager with an edgy sense of humor. Written by a former stripper, the movie isn't likely to win over social conservatives. As if to give equal time, Page is a "bitchy and arrogant young Republican" in Smart People, with Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Though you've been in the business for ten years, The New York Times called you a "phenom waiting to happen" and the Toronto Star said you're on the "cusp of stardom."
Reaction like that is kind of surreal. It's a hard thing to [respond to] because it's so bizarre.
Did you know that Juno was the movie that might make your career? It's always a surprise. When I read a script and it makes my heart jump, I want to pursue it. I feel passionate.
