While this year's Oscar contenders may be dark, at least that means brilliant performances. GEORGE CLOONEY sparkles in Michael Clayton, and JOHNNY DEPP shines like a black pearl in Sweeney Todd, but Best Actor should go to the peerless DANIEL DAY-LEWIS as a brutal oilman in the great (and radical) There Will Be Blood. Best Actress should pit MARION COTILLARD' s tragic %dith Piaf in La Vie en Rose against JULIE CHRISTIE' s delicate turn as an Alzheimer's patient in Away from Her. Bet on Cotillard--the Academy likes its suffering flamboyant. Although No Country for Old Men is the Best Picture favorite, I'm predicting an Atonement upset. Why?
