Known for its classic minimalism, Calvin Klein
walks on the wild side with a new line of vibrant makeup that's fresh and fearless. By Patricia Tortolani

As a fashion house, Calvin Klein has always been known for its sleek, simple designs and its quiet tones of sand, ivory, and pebble. But the new makeup collection from ck Calvin Klein -- the younger, less expensive branch of the company -- is neither modest nor neutral. Its whopping 209 products include eye shadows in effervescent shades of pink, purple, and blue, and vivid lipstick colors that would make Gwen Stefani smile. And it all happens to be perfectly timely. "This collection is about taking risks and having fun with makeup," says Kevin Carrigan, creative director for ck Calvin Klein. "We wanted women to know that they can get playful colors from Calvin." Perhaps most dramatic is the contrast between this and the previous makeup lines from the house. In the late 1970s and again in 2000, Calvin Klein's muted color scheme was translated into earthy eye shadows and basic, almost invisible shades of lipstick and blush. Both minimalist lines were short-lived; the first seemed ahead of its time, the second too late. "Everyone already knows how to do beige eyes," says Mark Carrasquillo, global makeup artist for ck Calvin Klein beauty who created the looks on these pages, about the drastic differences between this collection and its predecessors. "Women want something new and exciting. And that's what we are here to give them."
