Harvard University's trial policy of providing women-only gym times six hours a week is getting mixed reviews.
The trial began in early February after six Muslim women requested specific hours to use the gym without men present. This allows the women to dress more comfortably for exercising without having to cover their hair and most of their skin, in one of the least used of Harvard's many gyms.
Some argue that the policy benefits many women. "It's about expanding the range of choices," said Hussein Ibish, director of the Foundation for Arab-American Leadership. "Women, for all kinds of reasons, don't want to exercise in front of men."
But some students have complained and the school newspaper published an editorial criticizing the trial policy. Harvard will re-evaluate the policy at the end of the semester.
