Although illegal in 44 states, hazing affects more than half of college students belonging to campus groups. They still reported having experienced hazing, a new study found.

Elizabeth Allan and Mary Madden from the University of Maine's college of education and human development got responses from more than 11,000 students at 53 institutions for their National Study of Student Hazing. And it's not just jocks. They reported at the annual NASPA conference these hazing rates for some campus groups:

* Varsity athletics -- 74%

* Fraternities and sororities -- 73%

* Club sports -- 64%

* Performing arts groups -- 56%

* Academic clubs -- 28%
