College campuses are safer than they used to be and have less crime than the national average, according to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Justice. The report also notes that campus law-enforcement groups are better prepared than they were a decade ago.
But in response to recent campus shootings, police departments at Arizona's three universities are arming their officers with military-style assault rifles. ASU bought four new rifles at $700 each and hopes to buy four more. Officers will undergo 40 hours of training before using them.
A national student group is pushing for the right to carry concealed weapons on campus. Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) claims to have more than 16,000 members at 500 campuses. Nearly all colleges ban firearms on campus, but many students are signing on to SCCC via Facebook in response to recent campus shootings.
