When Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons singled out Fumito Ganryu to be given his own label this past summer, she did it without any fanfare. The 31-year-old Fukuoka native, who had up till that point been a pattern cutter for Junya Watanabe, was installed in his own office and left to get on with it.
