Fly to Tulum or Ibiza or Malibu or Montauk and you will see, at the baggage claim or staring out at the shifting waters, tee- and sweats-clad backs (and even bums) announcing artists wanted or inmusicinlove or, most commonly, freecity. These slogans are often accompanied by rainbows or doves. The look is unapologetically sporty modern hippie. Says FreeCity founder Nina Garduno, "Everything about the brand is positive, about light, and why not?"
And why would anyone want to travel in anything else? Garduno, who is also the vice president of menswear for Ron Herman, has an unerring eye for fit and feel. In her serene Los Angeles workshop, she and her team abuse beautiful Swiss cotton and Italian-made tees until they are as soft and worn in as a favorite shirt from a Gordon Lightfoot gig.
