Those of us still choosing to dwell in the Snow Belt state of Wisconsin got more than they bargained for this winter. A record 100 inches of the white stuff made for a white Christmas and white St. Paddy's Day ... in fact, it's been white every day since before Thanksgiving!
Our usual accumulation is a paltry 41 inches, just enough for those Kodak moments.
Not this year. Last month a blizzard created a 2,000-car parking lot on the nearby interstate highway. Travelers, truckers and even those just out running errands got trapped in the mess after a truck skidded off the road. Some were stuck for more than 10 hours, while their cars ran out of gas and they ran out of food and water. Major finger-pointing resulted as the state patrol, local gendarmes and the national guard fought over who dropped the ball in failing to close the on-ramps.
A white Easter
March 20 was the first day of spring, and the official tally marked us less than an inch short of 100 inches. On March 23, our Easter dinner was interrupted by a 20-minute blizzard of huge flakes that dumped another two inches on our cars. All nine of us gathered on our hosts' deck to photographically document the brief but record-setting precipitation.
The pair of sandhill cranes who nest in the marsh behind my condo have already returned from their migration. On Easter Sunday they were out digging for breakfast under one of the pines, their huge footprints visible in the snow.
