Colleges nationwide are studying ways to improve mental health services and campus security after recent campus massacres at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University.
In Florida, students may see a new fee to pay for more mental health counselors at public university campuses. Ten of Florida's 11 state schools have lower student-to-counselor averages than the international average of one counselor for every 1,500 students.
The goal is to get more mental health help on campus so troubled students can access help "before they get to a crisis level," said university system vice chancellor Dottie Minear.
