THOUGH THEY ARE best known for the international disco hit "Mainline" (Buddah Records, 1979) and the production style of former lead singer Leroy Burgess III that became the template for Chicago "house" music, Black Ivory first came to public notice through the release of two ballad-heavy albums featuring the "sweet soul" sound popularized by Thom Bell-produced groups such as The Stylistics and The Delfonics.

Originally released on the New York City-based independent Today Records in 1972, Don't Turn Around reached #13 on the R & B Top 40 albums chart. While its title track and the follow-up "You and I" were successful singles (#38 and #32 respectively, the former spending nine weeks on the chart), the album still failed to reach much of an audience outside of the eastern United States due to the label's financial instability and eventual dissolution. Don't Turn Around was re-released as a higher-quality, double-length set on CD in 1993 by the London-based Castle Records, with the 1973 follow-up Girl Won't You Change Your Mind in 2003. Its ...
