Piano Moods: Contemplations, 27 pieces on the quiet side; Piano Moods: Gradations, 33 pieces on the innocent side; Piano Moods: Fascinations, 35 pieces on the quirky side, by various artists. Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers Ltd. (www.boosey.com/shop). 52pp., 44pp. and 52pp. respectively. $14.32 each.
The three volumes being reviewed constitute a new series called Piano Moods. One volume is Contemplations; the other two are Gradations and Fascinations. The publisher Boosey & Hawkes has created a most attractive lay-out for these 95 solo piano pieces, most of which are at the intermediate level.
I thoroughly enjoyed the contrasting styles represented in each volume. All periods from the 16th-century to modern are present. The volumes include some familiar works, such as Franck's "Doll's Complaint," but a clear majority of the pieces are new and at times refreshing.
To cite a few "refreshing" examples, the first selection in the Contemplations volume is "Barncleupedie (with apologies to Erik Satie)" by James MacMillan. This clever static piece is an excellent opener. In the same volume is Anton Bruckner's "Quiet contemplation on an autumn evening." This is a lovely barcarolle-like piece, which is reminiscent of a Mendelssohn "Song Without Words."
