Exploring the two-volume set of Le Portrait de Daisy Hamilton (1934-38) by Charles Koechlin proved to be a continually interesting musical journey.
Infatuated with the British-born film star Lilian Harvey (alias Daisy Hamilton), Koechlin wrote 89 short works revealing his impressions of both the woman and the actress. Although these pieces are not assigned a particular instrumentation, 24 of them are an obvious fit for performance by solo piano; these works are contained within these two books.
This edition contains a preface by Robert Orledge that offers enlightening background information on the composer, his inspiration and method of composition, and valuable comments on the music itself.
