In German, there is a most interesting aphorism often quoted by musicians: "Das Wie bestimmt das Was und das Was bestimmt das Wie." Literally translated, "how determines what, and what determines how." Within a musical context, the technique and skill of a performer constitutes the "how." The "what" is the final artistic product presented to the audience. The obvious implication is that there is a significant symbiotic relationship between the two. But is this idea just a musical variation on the chicken and egg conundrum? Is the artistic impulse itself a progenitor of technical means? Or does technical ability necessarily preclude artistry at the highest levels? ...
