As a pianist, part of my job is to communicate strong, sometimes dramatic, emotions in my music. Playing dramatically is one thing, but to be overly emotional about the work involved in practicing or performing is something else completely. In fact, over the years I have learned that I do best when I keep the drama out of the work process. I simply put in my time every day at the piano, and try not to be neurotic about the daily results. Some days I play brilliantly. I learn music fast and smart, and it is as if my hands have a wisdom all of their own. Other days nothing goes well.
