Preventive therapies are underprescribed for postmenopausal women with preexisting coronary heart disease, according to data from the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study Research Group.
The study included 2,763 postmenopausal women with coronary heart disease (CHD). Despite the participants' CHD status, proven secondary treatments--most notably, aspirin, [beta]-blockers, and lipid-lowering agents--were substantially underused, reported Eric Vittinghoff, Ph.D., of the University of California, San Francisco, and his associates in the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study Research Group.
Most study participants were taking aspirin at enrollment, but only one-third were taking [beta]-blockers.
