CANCUN, MEXICO -- Forceps and vacuum extraction should not as a general rule both be used to assist the same delivery, according to Dr. Frank H. Boehm.
"The worst outcomes--seizures and hemorrhage--are increased when both are used. A physician should pick one device, and if the delivery does not go easily or moderately easily it should be abandoned," Dr. Boehm said at a conference on obstetrics, gynecology, perinatal medicine, neonatology, and the law.
During the mid to late 1990s, guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists established that forceps- and vacuum-assisted deliveries were similar, with identical indications and identical definitions for fetal stage and location.
