SAN FRANCISCO -- A 48-hour course of prophylactic intravenous antibiotics in patients with culture-negative preterm premature rupture of membranes should be sufficient to prolong latency without the need for additional oral antibiotics, Dr. Svena Julien said.
Dr. Julien of Yale University, New Haven, and her associates conducted a randomized, double-blind trial in 75 patients. They found that additional oral antibiotic prophylaxis worked no better than placebo in prolonging latency and in fact may have even shortened it, she reported at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
