CANCUN, MEXICO - A modified biophysical profile is the best way to monitor a fetus before labor, Dr. Roger K. Freeman said at a conference on obstetrics, gynecology, perinatal medicine, neonatology, and the law.
A modified biophysical profile, which combines measurement of amniotic fluid volume with nonstress testing, is preferred because, unlike a nonstress test alone, it includes a chronic marker of fetal status: amniotic fluid volume.
In addition, the modified biophysical profile is as accurate and sensitive as a contraction stress test with the advantages of being easier and less time consuming, said Dr. Freeman, who is the director of the Ob.Gyn. Newborn Careline at Long Beach (Calif.) Memorial Medical Center.
For fetuses that require antepartum monitoring, a modified biophysical profile should be done once a week if the amniotic fluid index is more than 8.0 cm.
