NEW ORLEANS--The lifetime risk for ovarian cancer in the Ashkenazi Jewish population is as high in BRCA2 carriers as in BRCA1 carriers, but the disease manifests at a later age in BRCA2 carriers, a recent study suggests.
The findings could have implications for determining the necessity and timing of prophylactic oophorectomy in at-risk patients in this population, which has a higher-BRCA carrier rate than the general population, according to Dr. Uziel Belier of Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.
Although estimates of ovarian cancer risk have been quite variable from study to study, it was previously believed that the lifetime risk of ovarian cancer in BRCA2 carriers was lower (about 10%20%) than in BRCAI carriers (about 30%-60%), Dr. Beller said at the annual meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.
