SAN FRANCISCO -- Results of the first case-control study of third-trimester amniocentesis suggest the procedure is not associated with an increased risk of obstetric problems within 48 hours of testing.

Findings of the 220-patient study are supported by previous data derived from case series suggesting that the immediate risks of third-trimester amniocentesis are minimal, Dr. Catherine Y. Spong said in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

"Pooling the published data and including ours, stillbirth or neonatal death after third-trimester amniocentesis has never been reported among 1,919 cases," said Dr. Spong of Georgetown University, Washington.
