MANILA, April 1 Asia Pulse - The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) has warned hospitals to strictly follow the existing rules that limit to 10 per cent the number of foreign transplant patients pending the implementation of the new administrative order (AO) on polices of kidney donors and transplants.
The country's Health Secretary Francisco Duque III made the call on reports the limitation on the number of foreign transplant patients is never followed in most private hospitals.
Hospitals are allowed to perform only 10 per cent of all transplants annually on foreigners.
"Until the new AO is implemented, hospitals should follow the old order. We will discredit them if they will not follow the rules," Duque said.
The health chief also cautioned that the DOH will be investigating or sanctioning members of the medical community who promote commercial organ donation and violate the rules.
The new DOH policy declares that kidney transplantation is not part of medical tourism in the country. However, foreign patients are still allowed to go to the Philippines to have their transplants here.
"Organ transplants are not included. We do not advertise transplants in our medical tourism," Duque said.
