Procter & Gamble says its Dawn Direct Foam breaks grease into particles and absorbs them before they're rinsed off, keeping grease from other dishes. And it was best in our tough tests of 12 detergents (the rest are liquids). But the initial 13.5-ounce pump bottle costs $3.18, or almost 12 cents for a tablespoon, enough to clean a sinkful of plates, pots, and pans. Two other excellent products, Kirkland Signature (Costco) and Ajax Dish, did the job for less than 3 cents per tablespoon. Even the lowest rated will get dishes clean if you scrub enough.

Four of the products--Ecover, Seventh Generation, Earth Friendly, and Trader Joe's--make "green" claims. They're fairly pricey, and most were very good, not excellent. The exception was Ecover Ecological, which was second only to Dawn.
