In an effort to intensify its efforts toward identifying the causes of autism and ultimately developing treatments, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has begun a new research program, The Autism Centers of Excellence (ACE). As a means of "capitalizing on the gains" made in NIH research thus far, explained NIH Director Elias Zerhouni, M.D., ACE is a consolidation of two existing programs: Studies to Advance Autism Research (STAART) and the Collaborative Programs of Excellence in Autism (CPEA) …
