On February 18, the United States and several western European nations granted official recognition to the breakaway Serbian province of Kosovo. The move fanned ethnic tensions between the predominantly Muslim population of Kosovo and the Orthodox Christian Serbs who have traditionally viewed Kosovo as part of their homeland. It also generated fierce anti-American sentiment among the Serbs.
