College presidents can raise the bar for diversity in athletics, panelists noted at the 2008 NCAA convention.
"Leadership matters, and presidential leadership in choosing the athletic leadership can make the difference," said University of Cincinnati President Nancy Zimpher. Referring to it as the "presidential whip," she said, "Shame on us if we don't use it. I think presidents of universities are obliged to articulate a vision that incorporates the importance of athletics in building culture on our campuses and the importance of diversity on our campuses."
