Despite efforts to diversify college presidential appointments, the percentage of presidents from underrepresented groups has grown only 5% from 1986 to 2006, according to a study by the American Council on Education.
"This study suggests that colleges and universities must not only tap into the existing qualified pool of women in order to create greater gender diversity at the presidential level, but that much more significant efforts are necessary to create greater racial and ethnic diversity among presidents," said Jacqueline King, co-author of the study.
