Grounding Data Centers

By Amanda Earing, associate editor

Telecommunications grounding has been around for awhile, but the need to ground data centers is on the rise.

As data centers continue to grow, more facility and IT managers are recognizing the importance of protecting their equipment and data. In addition to back-up power for data protection, telecommunications grounding systems keep data center equipment safe from transient voltages, electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other power anomalies.

"With today's high frequency/high data transfer electronic equipment, even the smallest amount of electrical noise can reduce performance, create data errors and reduce Mean-Time-to-Failure of electrical equipment," says Alan Taft, senior product manager, Chatsworth Products Inc.

Telecommunications vs. traditional grounding

A telecommunications grounding system is different from traditional grounding applications as it protects sensitive interconnected electronics and cabling as well as other telecom infrastructure.

"Proper telecommunications grounding aids in the reduction of electrical noise, limits the voltage potential between interconnected equipment and minimizes the effects of electrical and magnetic field coupling during transient events, such as lightning, power system ground faults or even eternally generated transients," says Dale...
