The only member of the U.S. Congress to have been a Holocaust survivor, Congressman Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), passed away on February 11 at the age of 80. He was brought to America as a youngster from Hungary after seeing most of his family victimized because they were Jewish. Serving in his 14th term, the San Mateo Democrat had only recently announced that he would not run for reelection this year because he was suffering from cancer.
