In reading the articles "An Atheist Meets His Match" by Rev. James Heiser and "All That's Golden Doesn't Glitter" by Charles Scaliger (THE NEW AMERICAN, December 24, 2007), I'm reminded of an old saying: "When you argue with a fool, chances are, he's doing just the same." Combine that admonition with what is found in Scripture--"A fool says in his heart, there is no God"--and you can see the pointlessness in arguing with atheists. Atheists are people who have yet to even begin comprehending the question, "Why does anything exist at all?" I appreciate the good intentions of a book like The Dawkins Delusion?, which was written to overcome the arguments of atheist spokesperson Richard Dawkins (reviewed by Heiser in the December 24 issue); however, it is an exercise in futility.
Based on my observations, the primary reason why most people are atheistic is not because of the words of other atheists, but rather because of the works of the supposed representatives of God. I once saw a bumper sticker that read, "It's not God I have a problem with, just his fan club." And there you have it. Consider George W. Bush as one rather large example of that supposed "fan club." How many young people are turned away from God because of Bush's endless warmongering? Or are turned away because of the pew-warmers who support his actions without giving any thought as to why? Can you see where the idea behind the The Amber Spyglass (also reviewed), which pushed the idea that religion is the source of the world's evil, comes from?
