HOUSTON -- There are only about 30 published cases of anogenital Crohn's disease, but anecdotal reports of it are relatively common, according to Dr. Peter J. Lynch.
Chronic Crohn's disease may damage lymphatic channels and leave patients with lymphangiectasis or lymphangioma and associated scarring and vulvar edema.
In rare cases it's even been associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva, so gynecologists should suspect it when they see small, aphthous ulcers on the vulva or perianal area.
In at least 15% of cases, ulcers appear in the anogenital area before the intestinal disease is diagnosed, Dr. Lynch said at a conference on vulvovaginal diseases sponsored by Baylor College of Medicine.
